Founded in 2004, Birdrock Press rides a different wave. Recognizing that the world of publishing has undergone major upheavals in the last five years, our staff is dedicated to nurturing a new generation of writers. Larger presses are now constrained by the growing expense of printing, warehousing and distribution that forces many of these publishers to seek breakout books. This leads to a factory mentality where books become formulaic.

Many of our authors are first-time authors, often found on-line. They are voices whose unique style on a variety of topics make them sought after online, in newspaper, magazine, radio, and television media.

Our approach

Birdrock Press collaborates with other publishers and writers to explore new ways of cultivating a new generation of writers, artists and ultimately readers.

We focus on the creative talent first. As a small collaborative press, our members work together to encourage the best writing and illustration from each other. We recognize that the industry is growing and will look for fresh ideas and new ways to present material. Our vision is to cultivate a small group who will meet this new demand.

We offer new perspectives on a range of topics that are finding traction with a growing segment of readers. Our books are geared for a new way to read. Instead of the tomes, we publish books that are easily read and understood, organizing many of our offerings for excerpting to blogs, being read on e-readers and tablets, or simply being understood visually as much as through the content.

Go digital

Birdrock Press supports publishing across multiple platforms. When you publish, you are not restricted to one format or media. But rather, your publication is available in print and digital media. The key to this is setting up your formats and target media as you enter the final stages of your writing. Use applications that you are comfortable with when you are writing (eg. Microsoft Word), but plan to format your final drafts for digital publication.

By carefully structuring your publication you can take a single piece of writing and publish across multiple platforms. Birdrock has a working relationship with the major on-line publishing groups, including CreateSpace, PubIt and others. We provide assistance with formatting your material for different digital media. But we also love traditional printed books!

We believe that when writers, artists, editors and friends work together, the final work is orders of magnitude better. Why?

Because we all have blind sides. We fall in love with passages that should be pared down. We have ideas that do not gel on the page, and we do not always see it. Why do we ask our friends to read our writing or to comment on our art? Because we need outside eyes. Birdrock Press provides this framework. It works with writers and artists principally in California, developing and shaping manuscripts for final publication.
